How to Make a Mug Without a Pottery Wheel

Making a mug without a pottery wheel is easier than many beginners think. With slab building, a few simple tools, and a printable template, you can create a handmade mug at home without needing to throw on the wheel.

Slab building is one of the most accessible pottery techniques because it gives you structure, control, and repeatable results. If you want to make your first mug with less frustration, this method is a great place to start.

What you need

Before you begin, gather a few basic tools:

*If you want an easier start, use a tested template instead of measuring everything by hand. That way you can focus on shaping and joining instead of worrying about the proportions.

Step 1: Prepare your clay slabs

Roll out your clay to an even thickness of about 3/16 inch (5 mm). A consistent slab helps the mug dry evenly and reduces warping. Too thin makes it weak, too thick makes it slow to dry and heavy.

Cut out the shapes you need for your mug. Optional: Print the (free) pottery template. Place the template on your clay slab and trace the outlines carefully. Templates are especially helpful for beginners because they remove guesswork and make the form easier to repeat.

Step 2: Shape the base

Place the base flat on the table and gently curve the edge upward in small steps. You can also shape it over a kitchen bowl lined with cling film if that feels easier. Let the base dry until leather-hard before assembly. This is crucial because the base needs to be leather-hard so it holds its shape while you attach the wall.

Step 3: Build the wall and attach it to the base

Join the side pieces of the wall by scoring and adding slip. Press the seams firmly together, then blend them with a rib tool and a damp sponge. For extra strength, add a small coil of fresh clay along the inner seam and smooth it down carefully. That gives the joint more stability.

Score and slip the base to the wall, then press it in place. Reinforce the seam again with a coil of fresh clay. Smooth the inside seam with a brush or modeling tool and remove any excess clay.

Shape the handle, let it firm up a little, then score and slip both ends before attaching it to the mug. Reinforce the joints with little clay coils and smooth them with a damp sponge or modeling tool.

Step 5: Dry slowly

Let the mug dry slowly and evenly. Cover it lightly with plastic, especially around the handle, so the moisture leaves gradually. Fast drying can lead to cracks or distortion, so patience is important here.

Common beginner mistakes

If you avoid those issues, your chances of success go up a lot:

  • Uneven slab thickness.

  • Joining pieces before they are leather-hard.

  • Weak seams from too little scoring, slip or pressure.

  • Drying too quickly.

Why templates help

Printable pottery templates make the process faster and easier because they reduce mistakes and save time. Instead of starting from scratch, you can focus on shaping, joining, and finishing. That is especially helpful for beginners who want better results with less frustration. It also makes the process more enjoyable, because you can spend more time making and less time planning and correcting.
